Karuna Myanmar Social Services (KMSS) is a faith based social network at the service of the Catholic Church of Myanmar. Inspired by the Catholic Social Teaching Principle of “Option for the Poor,” KMSS is established and mandated by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Myanmar (CBCM) as its social arm to serve the poor and the needy. The specific areas of the Church's mission give attention to holistic human development, realization of Justice and Peace, environmental protection, humanitarian assistance and emergency relief services.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Myanmar (CBCM) started a process to organize social development activities in the Church since 1988 as an expression of its concern for the basic communities. A Social Animation Programme was launched in 1998 to raise awareness and build the capacities of priests, religious, and lay leaders, and in anticipation of setting up Karuna Offices.
A Karuna meeting was held in Loikaw from 24 to 28 September 2000. There were 60 participants representing 9 Dioceses. The participants drafted the KMSS statute and elect the Executive Committee. The first Karuna General Assembly was held in 2001 in the premises of the CBCM in Yangon. From this General Assembly, “Karuna Myanmar Social Services” was approved as the official name, the vision and mission formulated, and the National Office inaugurated.
KMSS is organized with a National Office (KMSS-National Office) located in Yangon, and 16 Diocesan Offices (DOs). The National Office was established in 2001. In the 90’s the DOs began to be established. After 2000, some other DOs were established. The DOs are as follows:
Our people transformed into mature, self-reliant, holistically developed local communities in solidarity with the Church
To serve the needy by motivating and empowering them towards quality and dignity of life based on the Catholic Social Teachings of the Church.
