“Extraordinary Synod on the Family”
The Holy Father Pope Francis called for an Extraordinary Synod of Bishops that will be held from October 5-18th, 2014 at the Vatican. The synod will reflect on the theme “The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of the Evangelization.”
Cardinal Peter Erdo, Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest in Hungary, was named as Relator General of the III Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod and Archbishop Bruno Forte of Chieti-Vasto, Italy, as Special Secretary of the synod.
The Synod of Bishops was established by Pope Paul Vl on Sept. 15, 1965 after the Second Vatican Council, and according to the Code of Canon Law in reference to synodal assemblies, the Synod meets in an extraordinary general assembly when the matter under consideration requires a rapid definition.
The Vatican has asked national bishops' conferences around the world to conduct a wide-ranging poll of Catholics asking for their opinions on church teachings on contraception, same-sex marriage and divorce.
Archbishop Lorenzo Baldisseri, secretary general of the Vatican's Synod of Bishops, asked the conferences to distribute the poll "immediately as widely as possible to deaneries and parishes so that input from local sources can be received."
